Like most builders, custom home builder Taran Williams of TS Williams Construction experienced a drop in business with the global economic recession. To generate more sales for his company, Williams decided to build a luxury model home.
"When the recession hit, I built the home to boost my company image; I did it for advertising," said Williams, who soon found himself the recipient of enough business to keep his company booked for the next eighteen months.
Williams built the 3,895 sq. ft. home in the hills of Nanoose, British Columbia, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. He specified the Insulspan® Structural Insulating Panel (SIP) System for the roof of the home. The Insulspan SIP System delivers continuous, high R-value insulation and an airtight building envelope for maximum energy efficiency.
"On the windy west coast, you need a tight building envelope, and you can’t get any better than SIPs, in my opinion," said Williams.
Insulspan's ready-to-assemble system saves builders valuable time drying-in the home, reducing the amount of time building materials are exposed to the elements.
"I can put up a custom home in under a month with a SIP roof, and that is what people like, especially in a rainy environment," said Williams.
In addition to the well-insulated roof, the home features an on-demand hot water heater, low emissivity windows, a heat recovery ventilator, and an efficient air-source heat pump. Williams finished the home with several luxurious touches, including climate-controlled wine storage and a home theater room.
These features earned Williams two silver CARE awards from the Victoria chapter of the Canadian Home Builders' Association (CHBA), as well as the People's Choice award for Vancouver Island. The home has also received two silver Georgie Awards® that recognize the finest homes in British Columbia, and is a finalist for the CHBA's national SAM award.
TS Williams Construction Company earns accolades for Metro Mountain home
NANOOSE BAY – TS Williams Construction Company Ltd. entered the Canadian Home Builders Association CARE awards for the first time this year and came away with three Silver awards, making it a finalist for Gold in the categories:
- Best single family detached spec home over 2,500 square feet
- Best residential renovation over $1 Million
- Best residential interior 2,000 – 4,500 square feet
Talking about the awards, company owner Taran Williams says, "It's nice to get the recognition for the extra mile that we go when we build a house. A lot of people don't see the extra effort that we put in. Everything we build is unique."
"Going the extra mile" could well be a company slogan. TS Williams Construction has been building custom homes and doing renovations and additions for more than a dozen years, many of them incorporating timber frame elements, all of them heavily incorporating energy efficiencies and the highest quality detailing.
The spec home called Metro Mountain is up for two Gold CARE awards as best spec home and best interior. Williams says it has so many features it would take pages to list them all.
They include both decorative elements as well as energy efficiencies including a heated driveway, cantilevered kitchen, integrated media/sound system, steam shower, self starting generator system and a refrigerated wine room. It's also shockingly beautiful with soaring ceilings and much use of timber and wood accents. Williams credits The Interior Design Group with contributing strongly to the overall finishes of the home.
"You don't build a house like this to make a profit," Williams says. "But it shows what can be done. In this home I had a final say in how it was finished and furnished. And I'm really pushing energy efficiency in this house as well."
The home that is up for the renovation CARE award sits on a five acre estate in Parksville and required a complete exterior facelift. Again, Williams points out that Structure Design and The Interior Design Group were involved and contributed to the finished home that includes a spectacular outdoor kitchen complete with fireplace and pizza oven. Williams says he's proud of the homes entered this year. Each project he works on is special, he says and each one comes to him through client references.
"From the initial meeting with a customer through the design period and the building, you get to be pretty good friends with a customer," he says. "I focus on quality and on budgeting. I like to work within a budget and that's one of the reasons I get referrals." In fact, he says that if he put all the written testimonials he receives on his web site, there'd be little room for anything else.
Following is a sampling:
"We've never experienced such a well-planned, well-run and well-executed job. TS Williams Construction fulfilled every promise in a timely and professional manner, always respecting our wishes and our home. We plan to use your services again in the future."
- Karen Kenyon
"TS Williams Construction's ability to create a new design and follow it through to the last detail was commendable. It was also refreshing to deal with a company willing to provide realistic quotations and follow them up with timely accounting. We have accomplished exactly what we set out to achieve."
- Andrew and Shannon Boddy
"We can heartily recommend TS Williams Construction to build you a beautiful, well built home in a timely 'to budget' fashion. The contractor, Taran, is a talented and gifted builder with knowledge, expertise, experience and integrity. We found the building process positive and, if we were ever to build again, we would use TS Williams Construction."
- Andrea and Garry Bellangente
Williams notes that when people approach him, they usually want him to build their dream home. Williams frequently works with Ken Tanguay of Structural Design who, like Williams, likes to think "outside the box."
Williams also stresses the importance of working within the client's budget. Long before any building begins, he spends time with the client, getting to know their lifestyle so that the home he and Ken Tanguay design fits the way they live. Challenging sites are the norm, he says, and he never shies away from them.
He also praises the trades people he works with, people who take enormous pride in the work they do.
He consults closely with his clients, he says, and never turns away from a problem.
"If you address problems with a customer from day one, you'll wind up friends at the end," he says. "Avoiding confrontation on a job site is your enemy."
He adds that he has never built the same house twice and plans to continue to do the creative, high quality work he is known for. Building a TS Williams home is an art, he says.
"We focus on quality, not quantity. If I didn't have to work seven days a week, I'd be lost."
